Shell services are offered only to people I personally know and trust.
- Don't use passwords that suck.
- Don't use the same password as your mail password.
- Don't use the same password as other systems you use.
- SSH keys are preferred.
Our systems are constantly being probed by people hoping to hack your account. To minimize that risk, as well as keep the system load acceptable, gigo.com will automatically block access to people who incorrectly put in usernames or passwords while trying to use ssh or mail.
When this happens, the only thing that will be accessible is regular web access to http://gigo.com ; the mail server and ssh server will both be blocked.
Blocking will last between 15 minutes and several hours, depending on the type of abuse. Attempts to log in with bad usernames tend to be blocked for a while. Attempts to log in as "root" will be blocked for several hours. Repeated password failures on valid accounts, will be blocked for 15+ minutes (with increasing timeouts if the abuse continues).
